INTRODUCTION TO FIRST KINGS
The two books of Kings (originally one book) carry on the history of Israel from the books of Samuel. They cover a period of about four centuries from the closing years of David’s reign to the time the people were taken into captivity in Babylon. They describe the division of the kingdom into two, and the history, decline and fall of the separate kingdoms. As with the books of Joshua, Judges and Samuel, the two books of Kings have been written as prophetic history. That is, the author’s main concern was not merely to record events, but to show the meaning of those events in the purposes of God.
1 & 2 Kings describe the period of the monarchy in ancient Israel (970–586 B.C.). While the books do not specify an author, they could not have been written before the sixth century b.c., since 2 Kings 25:27–30 describes the release of King Jehoiachin from prison in Babylon in 561 and the books must therefore date from some time after that.

BOOK SUMMARY
The book of 1 & 2 Kings describes God’s faithfulness to his people despite their sin. Despite ending with the judgment of exile, there was still hope in God’s promises at the end of 2 Kings. God had made an eternal promise to David (2 Sam. 7:16) and at the close of the book the writer notes that the house of David was not only still intact but even flourishing in the house of the king of Babylon (2 Kings 25:28). This is meant to encourage God’s people to be hopeful and trust that God will ultimately fulfill all his promises.
Themes:
- The decline and eventual dissolution of the monarchy in Israel
- The fateful national consequences of Israel’s disloyalty to God
- The role of the prophets in speaking for God’s to his people
- The expulsion of God’s people from the land

Wisdom requires that we chose, read and depend on the Word of God which has become wisdom unto us. The time is now to read the Bible like never before just like the Bible said "Whoever watches the wind will not plant; whoever looks at the clouds will not reap (i.e., if you want perfection, you won't do anything.)." WHY SHOULD I STUDY FIRST KINGS?
The book of 1 Kings is more than just stories about the lives of the kings who reigned after Solomon. In these stories is embedded a specific way of life exhibited by many people on earth. To be specific, the life of the Believer as a Ruler on earth is more or less compromise by his inability to remain faithful to his maker. The people first asked for a King, God raised a king for them in David who is suppose to be a shadow of the Coming Messiah. However, these Kings fails to live up to the standards of the Covenant which God had with them. As a result of wrong doing, the kingdom is taken from one King to another still maintaining the promise of the coming of the Messiah. 1 Kings goes a long way to open more into this great Salvation and the inheritance of the Believes.
From the study of 1 Kings, we can deduce that, God is our one and only RULER and has given as the right to rule in His Son Jesus Christ of Nazareth
