Book of Joshua, Joshua also spelled Josue, the sixth book of the Bible, which, along with Deuteronomy, Judges, 1 and 2 Samuel, and 1 and 2 Kings, belongs to a tradition of Jewish history and law, called Deuteronomic, that was first committed to writing about 550 BCE, during the Babylonian Exile. BOOK SUMMARY
The book of Joshua shows that the Lord did fulfill his promises to Abraham (Gen. 13:15) and Moses (Ex. 3:8) in giving Israel the Promised Land. Thus, this book is a lesson on the faithfulness of God and his promises (cf. 21:43-45; 23:14). At the same time, the book of Joshua sets the stage for the beginning of a new era in God’s dealing with his people—namely, the history of Israel’s failure to trust God and live up to their covenant obligations as his people (cf. 23:15-16). This had been characteristic of Israel in the past as recorded in the Pentateuch and this characterizes the historical books that follow.
Themes:
- The partial conquest, distribution, and settlement of the Promised Land.
- The dangers of idolatry.
- Israel’s need for continuing covenant faithfulness to the one true God.

In Joshua 1:8, God commanded Joshua saying “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth, but thou shalt meditate thereon day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” Even though the above verse contains the secret to success, there is more to studying the word of God than trying to dig out prosperity and success from it. WHY IS THE BOOK OF JOSHUA SO IMPORTANT?
In this book we find accounts of faithfulness: Rahab the harlot (Joshua 2:1–21), the battle of Jericho (6:1–27), and Caleb the warrior (14:6–14). We also witness disobedience and its consequences: Achan’s sin (7:1) and the resulting loss at Ai (7:5), failure of some tribes to annihilate the enemy as God commanded, and even Joshua making a treaty with the Gibeonites without first seeking the Lord (9:1–27). The book also celebrates God as general, defender, and king. This is to say that, the book of Joshua is a message of God’s reward to faithfulness and diligent in the Study of God’s Word.
