INTRODUCTION TO THE BOOK OF NEHEMIAH
The book of Ezra and Nehemiah were originally one book before they were separated into two books by the early scholars. These books served as a continuation of the Israelites history in First and Second Chronicles. It is agreed by scholars that the book was written by Nehemiah around 446-434 B.C. The book of Nehemiah is centered on the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem but in the book is also hidden patriotism and faithfulness to one’s nation. The book however can be divided into two parts for easy understanding of the Bible. These division includes;
- Rebuilding the walls, chapters 1—7
- Revival and reform, chapters 8—13

In 538 B.C., a small group of Jews was allowed to return to Jerusalem with Zerubbabel from their captivity in Babylon. The temple was rebuilt in 515 B.C. and Ezra called the people to spiritual restoration in 457 B.C. But in 444 B.C., almost 100 years after the first Jews had returned, much of the destruction done by the Babylonian army hadn’t been repaired. Israel was surrounded by enemies and in danger.
Nehemiah, a court official under King Artaxerxes, heard about the condition of the city and asked permission to return to his homeland and rebuild the walls. His enemies did everything they could think of to discourage him. After a nighttime inspection, Nehemiah called the Jewish officials together and encouraged them to rebuild the city’s defenses.
Finally, in spite of discouragement and threats, the work was finished. Nehemiah ends his work with an account of the nation’s spiritual revival and the dedication of the walls. In this book, Nehemiah prays 11 times. This book records the last historical events of the Old Testament, although Malachi was probably written some 60 years later. Below are some of the themes that can be found in the book of Nehemiah;

WHY SHOULD I READ THE BOOK OF NEHEMIAH?
The book does not just present an account of Nehemiah, a Jewish leader who rose up in his days to bring dignity and restoration to his Nation. In the book is embedded some significant truth of understanding prophecy and time. The exile in Babylon was foretold and it needed a man who understood time and could understand the timing of God Almighty. In our lives, all things cannot happen at a time. Our lives is an ongoing prophecy that requires fulfilment at different times. The bigger truth is that, it is not just easy to know when your own time is. The book of Nehemiah is a book of restoration of the glory of a nation but in it are some significant subjects worthy study. This includes; Identity, Patriotism, Community, Opposition, Prayer.
During the reconstruction of the wall, the Israelites faced opposition. When Nehemiah’s enemies tried to lure him away from the site, he responded, “I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you?” (Nehemiah 6:3). In so doing, Nehemiah demonstrated his commitment to fulfill the pledge he had made to the Lord to rebuild Jerusalem (see Nehemiah 1:11; 2:4–5). Nehemiah can serve as an example to us of the importance of remaining faithful to the Lord even in the midst of opposition.
