READ THE BOOK OF RUTH ONLINE, STUDY AND UNDERSTAND THE DYNAMICS OF THE BIBLE

The book of Ruth records events during the time of the Judges (pre-1020). It was probably written either at an early or late stage in David’s reign. The book supported David against those who insinuated that David was not a fully loyal and qualified Israelite king because of his foreign ancestry. According to the Jewish tradition, it is believed the book was written by Prophet Samuel. The final words of the book link Ruth with her great-grandson, David (Ruth 4:17–22), so we know it was written after his anointing. The genealogy at the end of the book shows David’s lineage through the days of the judges, acting as a support for his rightful kingship. Solomon is not mentioned, leading some to believe the book was written before David ascended the throne.

BOOK SUMMARY

The book of Ruth has Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz as major characters and is a story of romance, redemption, and loyalty. The story begins with the character Naomi who has lost her husband and two sons, leaving her destitute in a foreign land. The suffering is overwhelming as she turns bitter and angry against God. Nevertheless, Ruth the Moabites, her daughter in-law, forgoes the safety and provision of her own extended family and pledges her allegiance to Naomi. As they struggle to survive, Ruth is discovered by Boaz, a relative of Naomi, who falls in love with Ruth. Boaz acquires the right to become her husband and delivers Ruth and Naomi from their plight. The book concludes with a genealogy that demonstrates that King David, and eventually Jesus, descends from the foreigner Ruth.

The book of Ruth tells the story of God’s faithfulness to his people in a specific case, as a Moabite woman becomes part of his story of redemption.

WHY IS THE BOOK OF RUTH IMPORTANT?

In the book of Ruth, The Salvation plan of God is pictured. The salvation plan is seen for both gentiles and the Jewish in the sense that, both Naomi and Ruth is redeemed. Ruth is not an Israelite, she is from the people of Moab. But because of God’s call on her life, she joins the people of God and worships him alone. This reminds us of the promise of the gospel, that God is building a family from all nations of the earth. And Boaz, the “kinsman-redeemer” of Ruth and Naomi, serves to remind us that Jesus is our ultimate redeemer who purchases us out of sin and death with his blood. And these ancestors of King David serve to point us forward to the ultimate king, the one who sits on the throne forever: Jesus Christ.
