INTRODUCTION TO THE BOOK OF ZECHARIAH

The book of Zechariah is actually a book that is said to have being written by the Hebrew Prophet Zechariah. It is one of the books of the twelve minor prophets of the Old Testament. The prophet Zechariah was one of the three prophets, along with Haggai and Malachi, who ministered to the exiles returning to Jerusalem. This prophet ministered during the reign of King Josiah, sometime around 630 B.C., before that king put a temporary end to idol worship in Judah. His message may have even helped bring about the nation’s return to worshiping God.

BOOK SUMMARY

Zechariah deals with Israel's complaint that they have experienced God's chastisement for their sin, but the surrounding nations have gone unpunished. Zechariah assures them that the other nations will indeed experience God's wrath and Israel will be vindicated. The people have questions concerning religious practices (especially fasting) in light of their new life in the Promised Land, and Zechariah advises them on the purpose of the law and religious duties. In order to inspire the Israelites and give them hope, Zechariah describes in remarkable detail the coming King who would bring full blessing and freedom to God's people.

Themes:

Messiah: Zechariah focuses on a political / religious leader who will deliver Israel from all her sins, troubles, and enemies, and is quoted in several places throughout the passion narratives of the gospels as well as in the book of Revelation.

God’s Spirit: The book of Zechariah reminds us that God’s presence by his Spirit is at the heart of the restored people of God.

WHY SHOULD I READ AND STUDY THE BOOK OF ZECHARIAH?

At a point in time, children of Israel began to feel like God was wicked towards them in that, He punishes them for the wrong the committed yet He leaves the nearby nations unpunished. God therefore had to speak from Heaven through Prophet Zechariah. This is to say that, Zechariah became a voice of encouragement to the children of Israel. The book of Zechariah also has in it the coming of the Messiah. One may ask how? Well, Zechariah includes clear passages that point to God’s Anointed One. Jesus is portrayed in His

first and second comings as both Servant/King and Man/God respectively. He appears as the Angel of the Lord (3:1, 2), the Branch (3:8; 6:12), and the King–Priest (6:13). Predictions about Jesus are found in several places—9:9, 10 anticipates the Savior’s Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem on that first Palm Sunday; 11:11–13 describe Jesus betrayed for 30 shekels of silver; 12:10 predicts the Messiah’s piercing (12:10) and 13:7 his abandonment. Chapter 14 prophesies Jesus as the coming Judge and righteous King.
